LODISNA, a renowned Spanish logistics operator specialising in national and international full truckload road transport, integrated logistics and distribution, has completed a pioneering pilot project with the Windrose electric truck, covering 3,269 kilometres during July across Spain under real load and traffic conditions, running complete routes such as Madrid – Algeciras and the return leg.
The vehicle operated with 20 tonnes in a rigid box body on domestic routes and under different driving arrangements (single driver and double driver), making it possible to assess its energy performance in demanding scenarios.
During the trial, carried out in July, ranges of more than 570 km were recorded, even in conditions of high temperatures and summer congestion. Average consumption was 1.10 kWh/km, with minimum values of 0.93 kWh/km and maximum values of 1.65 kWh/km, the latter on legs with temperatures of up to 40 ºC. Average speed fell to 58.3 km/h on some stretches, compared with the usual 85–90 km/h, because of heavy traffic.
Charging infrastructure was one of the pilot's main challenges. Detours of up to 60 km were recorded owing to the limited availability of charging points, as well as energy prices of up to €0.60/kWh at stations with no nearby alternatives. Thanks to the tractor unit's technology, charges of up to 200 kWh were achieved using a dual-cable connection, doubling the power supplied by the charger.
The technical analysis also made it possible to identify key factors affecting the vehicle's performance, such as ambient temperature, trailer aerodynamics and logistics planning. This data will be used to optimise future routes and improve operational efficiency in real-world conditions.
The electrification of heavy transport forms part of LODISNA's sustainability strategy, which seeks to reduce direct and indirect emissions across the entire supply chain. The company is committed to technological solutions that can be applied in demanding operating environments, with the aim of scaling up cleaner, more efficient and more traceable logistics models.
Following the results obtained, LODISNA has announced a second phase of the pilot, which will run during November in a different operating context. This new stage will make it possible to test what has been learned, gather additional data and explore new transport arrangements, including international routes.
